Hasbrouck Heights NJ, the legendary Bendix Diner on Route 17, a cherished North Jersey landmark featured in films, TV shows, and music videos, is officially up for sale following its closure earlier this year due to sanitation and code violations.
Known for its retro charm and rich local history, the diner has long been a symbol of resilience, especially under the leadership of its owner, John Diakakis, a blind entrepreneur whose inspiring journey was featured in the 2022 documentary “Bendix: Sight Unseen.”
A North Jersey Icon Now for Sale
After being shuttered in January, the once-bustling Bendix Diner remains dark, though Diakakis still visits the vacant space several times a week. “This is not the way I would’ve wanted things to end,” he said, expressing the emotional toll of seeing the diner’s doors permanently closed.
Despite the community’s efforts—including a GoFundMe campaign that raised thousands to help bring the diner back up to code—the future of the Bendix is no longer in Diakakis’s hands. The property is now officially listed for sale with no asking price, open to offers.
Commercial Potential: Beyond the Diner
According to Nick Rogers of commercial real estate firm IPRG, the listing has already sparked interest from national brands and developers. “The diner still needs work,” Rogers said, “but this is a rare chance to revitalize or reimagine a truly iconic location.”
🏗️ Zoning & Redevelopment Opportunities:
-
Drive-thru access: Ideal for fast food chains like McDonald’s, Dunkin’, or Raising Cane’s
-
Telecom potential: Companies like T-Mobile, AT&T, and Crown Castle have expressed interest in installing a cell tower
-
Digital billboard ready: Conditional zoning makes the property attractive to advertising firms looking to capitalize on Route 17’s high-traffic visibility
A Legacy at a Crossroads
For Diakakis, the sale is bittersweet. “At this point, I’m in limbo,” he said. “It’s been a struggle because when you’re working 7 days a week and you earn a good living… the alternative really sucks.”
Though the diner may be closing a chapter, its story is far from over. Whether the Bendix Diner is restored to its former glory or transformed into a new commercial venture, the site remains a symbol of Hasbrouck Heights’ history and redevelopment potential.
Interested Buyers: Submit Your Offer
