Hasbrouck Heights NJ, the beloved Bendix Diner, a historic landmark on NJ-17 in Hasbrouck Heights, faces an uncertain future after being shut down by the Health Department due to fire code violations. This unexpected closure has left both the owner, John Diakakis, and the community grappling with what lies ahead for the iconic establishment.
Why Was the Bendix Diner Shut Down?
The Health Department closed the Bendix Diner on Friday, citing unresolved issues with the fire suppression system. Diakakis, the owner, shared that he has been actively working to address the problem since it was first brought to his attention in 2021. Despite engaging multiple contractors, progress has been slow due to the building’s age and structural challenges.
“It’s a fire suppression issue,” Diakakis acknowledged. “The town is 100% in the right because fire code violations need to be addressed.” However, the complexity of bringing the diner, built in 1947, up to code has proven daunting.
Ongoing Challenges for Diakakis
After his mother’s passing in late 2024, Diakakis and his siblings inherited the diner, adding personal and financial pressure to the ongoing issues. The Bendix was allowed to reopen briefly under strict limitations, only serving waffles and cold sandwiches until fire suppression updates were complete. However, after selling hot food, the diner was shut down again, and its food license revoked.
Diakakis explained the toll the situation has taken: “I’m running the day-to-day, making calls after my shift, and hitting a dead-end every time.” He expressed frustration at being unable to resolve the problem despite his relentless efforts.
A Community Icon in Jeopardy
The Bendix Diner, featured in movies, TV shows, and even a documentary titled Bendix: Sight Unseen, is more than just a restaurant—it’s a cherished community hub. Diakakis described it as “the best thing that could have ever happened” to him, a place where he’s worked alongside his three sons and connected with countless patrons.
For the community, the diner represents nostalgia, comfort, and resilience. A GoFundMe fundraiser was recently launched to support the diner, raising over $2,800 to help update the fire suppression system and make structural improvements.
Hope for the Future
Despite the setbacks, Diakakis remains hopeful. He has been meeting with fire suppression experts daily and is determined to do everything possible to reopen the diner. The overwhelming support from the community has given him strength during these tough times.
“People are reaching out to me in all sorts of ways, offering help,” Diakakis shared. “I still want to be able to say goodbye to people if we can’t resolve this, but I’m holding out hope.”
Support the Bendix Diner
The Bendix Diner’s legacy is a testament to its enduring place in North Jersey’s history. Community members can contribute to the GoFundMe fundraiser to help secure its future and ensure that future generations can enjoy this iconic establishment.
While the road ahead is uncertain, the resilience of Diakakis and the unwavering support from the community make it clear: the Bendix Diner is more than just a restaurant—it’s a symbol of perseverance and unity.

Shameful New Jersey bureaucratic overreach.
What a bunch of soulless pigs.
Why anyone would operate a small business in this state is beyond me.
Unreal. Give illegals the red carpet but shut down the hard working US citizen. Another example of why people are fed up. Shameful on Hasbrouck Heights. Support your local businesses and the USA.
Give illegals the red carpet but shut down the hard working US citizen … well, thank you, don’t mind if I do!
