My name is HyunJu Kwak,
I am running to serve on the Ridgewood Board of Education. I am motivated to use my skills to help deliver excellent education for our students.

I am a product of the New Jersey public school system. I am a mom of 2 girls. I am an immigrant with degrees from Brown University and Wharton. I have background in strategy, financial analysis and real estate.
I truly benefited from a quality public education. Ridgewood schools’ mission of “Tradition of Excellence” resonates with me in a profound, personal way. I am eager to be part of this legacy to give back to the community I love so that others may benefit as I have from a top-notch public education.
The School’s Vision ‪2024 ‬plan outlined four core competencies that need to be taught: creativity, critical thinking, empathy and resilience. In order to enact Vision 2024, the school needs to run efficiently so that optimal portion of funds budgeted go directly towards education and not debt service.
Before the last referendum took effect, about 81 cents of each dollar budgeted went towards students’ education. Currently 75 cents per dollar is allocated to students, a 7.4% decline. My goal is to maximize every dollar budgeted to directly benefit student education in accordance with Vision 2024.
How this can be achieved is through Analysis, Planning and Transparency. As a strategy consultant and a financial analyst on Wall Street, I gathered facts and qualitative information, analyzed the data and devised solutions. Now, I oversee family investments in real estate, which has given me in-depth understanding of how facilities can be optimized and managed cost-effectively.
Transparency simply means no surprises. What you see is what you get, and I believe the job of the Board of Education is to keep all stakeholders in the know and engaged. To that end, I will actively seek out facts and feedback from the parents, teachers and administrators, and the community at large to find effective and efficient ways to continue to deliver first-rate education while achieving fiscal efficiency.
Serving on the Board of Education, for me, is to have a voice in developing solutions and creating a great product. It would be an honor for me to be entrusted with this important work.

  5. Anonymous, FYI – her competitors kids also go to religious schools.

  6. So what. They pay taxes.

  7. She has her own name and a brilliant and independent mind. Do you think RBG’s husband influenced RBG’s thinking? Let’s get back to the modern world. As is there is way too much retrogressive movements nowadays days. Lastly, please leave our kids alone. Do not stalk them.

  8. If she can work with Steve Kim, it should be easy to work with Dr. Fishbein.

  9. how do we elect someone who’s kids don’t even attend our school system? NOT

  10. Smith Wilson’s children went to private schools.

  11. taxpayer, until a year ago, you had James Morgan, Jennie Wilson, Sheila Brogan, and Vice Loncto – none of them had their children in the school at the time of serving. Today you have Sheila Brogan, James Morgan, Jennie Wilson serving who don’t have children currently in the school. Mohmoud’s children go to religious schools.
Kwak’s children went to Ridge at one point and then moved to same school as Jenny Wilson’s kids.
Kwak is running against Mohmoud. They both have children in private school – you will have to put “none” in write in column.

  12. taxpayer Why is that necessity to have kids in the school system to serve on the Board of Education?

  13. Having board members without kids in the system did wonders in certain towns in ocean and rocklandRockland counties.

  17. Ha!

Your wife can’t tell us this?
And none of the above conveys wisdom or knowledge…
Except for you tools in Ridgewood stuck in a never ending rat race that the Kwak is insistent upon perpetuating via the BOE to YOUR children. Good luck with that.

  18. YES…
Hyunju Kwak is clearly smart enough to NOT send her kids to Ridgewood schools.
