The “Affordable Care Act” Under Fire: Was It Always a Financial Scam?

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, the recent budget shutdown debate in Washington has done more than just halt government services; it has ripped the cover off what critics are calling the “financial sham” of Obamacare, officially known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA). While former President Obama and his allies hailed the ACA as his “greatest achievement,” the latest data on health care costs and skyrocketing premiums suggests a starkly different reality for American taxpayers.

The core promise of the ACA was simple: expand health coverage and lower costs. But a look at the trend of American health care spending before and after 2010 leads many to ask: Is Obamacare truly “affordable?”

The Bait and Switch: Premiums Soar, Taxpayer Tab Grows

The reality on the ground for consumers paints a grim picture, amplified by recent reports:

  • 75% Premium Spike: According to a KFF analysis of insurance filings, the average enrollee will see their premium costs increase by 75%—with many seeing even steeper hikes.
  • The Subsidy Crisis: Democratic leaders, including Senator Chuck Schumer, are pushing to extend “temporary” supersized COVID subsidies to “save” the failing program. Critics argue that these subsidies—which go to Americans earning up to $500,000 annually—are simply pouring hundreds of billions more into a broken system.

The core issue? Taxpayers are essentially being asked to cover an increasing portion of the exploding costs. Instead of a modest subsidy, taxpayers are now on the hook for an ever-larger percentage of premiums, trapping the system in a vicious cycle of cost explosion followed by demands for more government funding.

Many now view the ACA as a classic bait and switch: promise government-subsidized care, then when the inevitable cost surge hits, demand perpetual, massive taxpayer subsidies.

The EPIC Deception: A Dozen Broken Promises of Obamacare

Critics argue that the current budget battle has merely exposed the pre-existing lies surrounding the ACA’s implementation. A joint paper by the Paragon Institute highlighted a list of broken promises made when the ACA was “jammed through Congress” in 2010:

  1. “You Can Keep Your Plan and Doctor”: The most famous broken promise. By the end of 2013, over seven million consumers had already had their preferred insurance plans canceled.
  2. “Bending the Cost Curve”: Instead of lowering the rate of increase, health care costs increased, and individual market premiums doubled.
  3. Reducing the Deficit: Touted as a deficit reducer, the ACA has instead added hundreds of billions to cumulative deficits and is a significant contributor to the growing national debt.
  4. Medicaid Expansion Costs: The per-enrollee cost of Medicaid expansion turned out to be nearly 60 percent greater than initial expert projections.

The list of failures goes on, covering issues like life expectancy, emergency room usage, and even unauthorized immigrant enrollment. The core argument is clear: the Affordable Care Act has fundamentally failed to deliver on its founding promises of affordability and stability.

As Congress debates whether to extend the expensive COVID subsidies to prop up the system, the spotlight is firmly on whether the ACA is truly a sustainable health solution or merely a politically entrenched financial racket demanding endless taxpayer bailouts.
