Ridgewood NJ, on Monday, Brian Niccol officially steps in as the new CEO of Starbucks, taking the reins as the company faces declining sales and a falling stock price. Starbucks made headlines in August when they announced Niccol’s appointment, replacing Laxman Narasimhan, who served as CEO since March 2023.

Niccol comes to Starbucks with a proven track record of success, most notably from his time at Chipotle Mexican Grill, where he turned the brand around after foodborne illness outbreaks and led it through the pandemic. Before Chipotle, Niccol was the CEO of Taco Bell, under Yum Brands, where he brought a fresh, innovative approach that revitalized the brand.

His appointment caused a surge in Starbucks’ stock, soaring by more than 24%, marking the best day ever for the company’s shares. Analysts were quick to praise Niccol, calling him a “dream hire” and labeling him a “hall of fame restaurant CEO.”

A Proven Leader with a Marketing Background

Niccol brings with him deep expertise in marketing, a career that began at Procter & Gamble before moving to Yum Brands, where he eventually led Taco Bell. His marketing acumen played a crucial role in his success at Chipotle, and it’s expected to be just as valuable at Starbucks. However, while Niccol has experience leading large brands, Starbucks presents a more complex challenge, with its sprawling global presence.

While Chipotle reported $9.9 billion in revenue last year, Starbucks brought in $36 billion in fiscal 2023, with over half of its cafes located outside North America. The task of turning the coffee giant around will require more than just marketing expertise—it will need innovation, operational efficiency, and a clear strategic vision.

Niccol is expected to share more about his plans for Starbucks during the company’s fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call, likely taking place at the end of October.

Six Challenges Facing Starbucks

As Niccol steps in, here are six key problems he’ll need to address to get Starbucks back on track:

  1. The Value Equation Like many restaurants, Starbucks has raised prices in response to inflation. While the brand initially seemed insulated from consumer price sensitivity, recent quarters have shown a shift. Some customers are cutting back, opting for cheaper alternatives like Dunkin’ or McDonald’s. Niccol will need to find a way to balance pricing, either by lowering costs or convincing customers that Starbucks’ premium drinks are worth the extra expense.
  2. Bringing Back Gen Z Gen Z has been a driving force behind Starbucks’ cold beverage sales, but they’ve also led the pushback against the brand. Once seen as a progressive company, Starbucks now faces criticism over its anti-union stance and other controversies. Niccol will need to address these issues and reconnect with younger customers to regain their trust and loyalty.
  3. Mobile App Frustrations Starbucks’ mobile ordering system accounts for about a third of U.S. orders, but it has caused operational challenges and customer frustrations. While Chipotle made early investments in streamlining digital orders, Starbucks has lagged. Niccol will need to invest in solutions that improve the in-store experience for both mobile and walk-in customers.
  4. Sluggish Innovation While the Pumpkin Spice Latte continues to drive traffic, recent menu additions haven’t seen the same excitement. Under Niccol’s leadership, Chipotle introduced popular new items that helped increase traffic and sales. Now, he’ll need to bring that same innovative energy to Starbucks, creating new offerings that excite customers.
  5. The China Problem China is Starbucks’ second-largest market, but it’s also a significant challenge. The company’s sales in the region have been slow to rebound post-pandemic, and local competitors are gaining ground. Niccol will need to decide whether to push for a revival in China or take a step back.
  6. The Howard Schultz Legacy Although Howard Schultz has officially stepped down as CEO and chairman, his influence over the company continues to loom large. Niccol will need to establish his leadership while navigating the legacy of one of Starbucks’ most influential figures.

With his proven track record and experience leading companies through tough times, all eyes are on Brian Niccol to see if he can revitalize Starbucks and guide the company through its challenges. His first major test will come with the company’s earnings report this October, where he’s expected to reveal more about his strategy for the brand’s future.

  1. I wish him luck.

I went to a recently opened Chipotle store last month. Shockingly bad service and only fair tasting food.

    1. its a chain restaurant

  2. During the very few times I have visited a Starbucks, it’s always an odd experience. Never straightforward. VERY expensive for a coffee, odd coffee names, and sizes, different lingo, weirdly tattooed staff, knowing where to order, where to pick up, everyone on a laptop, and yes, I’m old. Not a fan. Dunkin is easier and more understandable, and the coffee is many times better, and not burned.

    1. Sorry but Dunkin coffee tastes really bad…
