River Edge NJ, join the Bergen County Historical Society as they celebrate Chwame Gischuch: Under the Shad Moon, The Lenape New Year on Sunday April 16th, 2023, 1 pm-4:30 pm at Historic New Bridge Landing, 1201 Main St, River Edge NJ.
Imagine a distant time when highways were footpaths, the only flights in the sky were flown by animals, and rivers were crystal clear, as we ponder the Prehistoric lifeways of our ancestors and particularly of the place we now call New Bridge Landing.
Observe the methods by which everyday tasks were anchored in Nature, when a good living came directly from animal, vegetable and mineral resources. Watch wild plants being processed into twine and hear the crack of rocks being fractured and shaped into tools with antler, wood, and other stones.
Primitive technologist Steve Adams offers a discussion and demonstration of the hardware which provided for food, clothing and shelter with comfort in Pre-Contact cultures. These ancient technologies were relevant and common for the majority of human history and are part of the legacy of ancestries around the globe. Discussion will be welcome during this open-air presentation.
Arthur Kirmiss is presenting at the event. The Society’s collections will be display in the Steuben House. Selections from BCHS’s extensive Native American collection is on exhibit.
The Steuben House, the Demarest House Museum and the Westervelt Thomas Barn will be open for tours. The Campbell-Christie House is undergoing repairs to the exterior and a new roof. Tour on the 1889 Bridge weather permitting, you can always duck into one of the house. Check out broom making and blacksmithing in the barn. Our cooks in the outkitchen are featuring shad and corn. Children can make a cornhusk doll to take home.
Admission: $12 adults, $7 students, BCHS members free. Free parking available on site. For additional information visit the society’s website www.bergencountyhistory.org, email them at bergencountyhistory@gmail.com, or call 201-343-9492 and leave a message.

He should be called a primitive technology expert, not a primitive technologist.
