BOSTON — As the police chief of this terrorized city, Daniel Linskey had much to worry about.

His week began with two terrorist bombs exploding at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, one of the world’s most famous sporting events. It ended with one of the alleged bombers shot to death by cops in a ferocious gunfight and another captured after a meticulous manhunt and daylong lockdown of an entire metropolitan area.

But as Linskey paused one morning while monitoring his beleaguered city’s security, he conceded that his most profound concern — and perhaps most perplexing question — is still a year away. How much more security will he need to protect next year’s Boston Marathon?
