Fort Lee NJ, early Sunday morning, chaos unfolded across New York City and New Jersey as Uvaldo Gonzalez, a 43-year-old Bronx resident, embarked on a violent crime spree that left three police officers injured and several carjackings in his wake.

It all began around 2:30 a.m. when Gonzalez allegedly stole a car during an armed carjacking in New York City. He then sped across the Hudson River into South Hackensack, New Jersey, where his rampage continued. According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, Gonzalez promptly crashed the stolen vehicle and attempted to hijack another car. Failing at first, he soon succeeded in carjacking another vehicle at knifepoint before fleeing the scene.

The crime spree escalated when, roughly 20 minutes later, a witness reported seeing Gonzalez driving erratically on three tires. Port Authority Police responded, locating Gonzalez and the stolen silver Toyota Sienna stuck on the upper level of the George Washington Bridge.

As officers approached, Gonzalez tried to hijack yet another car. When that failed, he made a desperate move by jumping into a Port Authority police cruiser. Officer Miguel Correa, who had stepped out of the vehicle, acted swiftly, diving through the open window as Gonzalez allegedly began slashing at his face with a knife. Despite the violent attack, Officer Correa, along with two fellow officers, managed to subdue Gonzalez and take him into custody.

Gonzalez was taken to Hackensack Hospital for an evaluation while facing multiple charges, including attempted murder, aggravated assault, and possession of stolen property. The three officers, including Officer Correa, were also treated at the hospital for minor injuries and later released.

Gonzalez, who has an extensive criminal history with 17 prior arrests, also had two active warrants in New York at the time of his arrest.

Port Authority PBA President Frank Conti praised the officers for their courage during the dangerous encounter. “I’m extremely happy that no one was more seriously injured,” Conti stated. “This is yet another example of the dangers of police work, and of our members stepping up and getting the job done.”
