Wyckoff NJ, The North Jersey community is mourning the loss of a beloved educator, grandmother, and lifelong learner. Mary Lou Ciavarra, a longtime Wyckoff resident and celebrated science teacher at Indian Hills High School, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 6, 2026, at the age of 94.

For over 15 years, Mary Lou was a fixture in the lives of students from Wyckoff, Oakland, and Franklin Lakes. Known for her infectious energy and a unique ability to make complex science accessible, she famously “put the phun in physics”—a legacy that earned her the prestigious Governor’s Teacher Recognition Award in 1998.

>A Life Defined by Love and Learning

Born and raised in Newark, Mary Lou’s life was a masterclass in dedication. Her personal love story began in the most unlikely of places: kindergarten. She eventually married her elementary school sweetheart, Vincent Ciavarra, and the two shared nearly 55 years of marriage before his passing.

Her academic journey was equally impressive. A graduate of Montclair State University with a Master’s degree, she continued her studies at Ivy League institutions like Cornell and Rutgers. Before arriving at Indian Hills, she shaped young minds at Columbia and Belleville High Schools.

Beyond the Classroom

Mary Lou was far more than a physics teacher. She was a vibrant member of the Wyckoff community, known for:

  • Active Living: She was a regular on the tennis courts at the Indian Trail Club well into her 80s.

  • Intellectual Curiosity: An avid Jeopardy! watcher, crossword puzzle enthusiast, and a formidable bridge and mah-jongg player.

  • Faith and Service: A devout parishioner of St. Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church and a dedicated volunteer at Christian Health.

“She was never one for fancy presents or fine dining; all she ever wanted was to be surrounded by those she loved.” — Family of Mary Lou Ciavarra
