Atlantic City NJ, LGBTQ Victory Fund, the only national organization dedicated to electing LGBTQ people to public office—endorsed former Atlantic City mayor Don Guardian for New Jersey Assembly today. The endorsement signals Victory Fund’s confidence that Guardian is well-positioned to win his Assembly race and will be a strong voice for equality once elected. Guardian would be the only openly LGBTQ member of the Assembly and the first openly gay Republican legislator in New Jersey history.
“LGBTQ Victory Fund is proud to endorse Don Guardian for Assembly,” said Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund. “Don is a values-driven leader who has demonstrated that the concerns of the LGBTQ family are widely shared and bipartisan. When he wins in November, Don will be a vital LGBTQ voice for equality in New Jersey.”
LGBTQ people remain severely underrepresented in government nationwide—holding just 0.18 percent of elected positions despite representing at least 4.5 percent of the U.S. population. This reality is particularly stark in New Jersey, which is one of five states with no out-LGBTQ state legislators. Guardian’s priorities in office will include supporting public safety, improving the business climate, and keeping costs affordable for the hardworking families of Atlantic County.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement and confidence of LGBTQ Victory Fund during Pride Month this year,” Guardian said. “I can still remember a time when it would be unthinkable for an openly gay man to seek public office. I believe it is important to reflect on the progress we have made and refocus on the work we still need to get done. In the Assembly, I will fight to make sure every community is heard and foster a culture of equality and inclusivity that reflects the values of Atlantic County.”
Victory Fund will promote Guardian’s endorsement among its hundreds of thousands of supporters nationwide. More information about Victory Fund can be found at victoryfund.org.
