Cabooses were not made to stand still and with consistent exposure to the elements over the years, the Caboose has suffered significant water damage. Along with initial repairs to the siding and windows, the best way to preserve the Caboose for future generations is house it under a pavilion that will shield it from the rain and snow. Construction and materials costs have gone up significantly and the project is estimated to cost $150,000. We are working with the Township to come up with a plan to fund those repairs and will need help from the community.
We are thrilled to announce that, with your generosity, the campaign has already raised over $20,000! AND from now until Mahwah Day, Liberty Hyundai and the DeSilva Family are matching all donations dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000!
To get involved, or for updates, email Historic@MahwahTwp.org.

A New Exhibit at the Old Station Museum
171 Old Station Lane
Opening Sunday, June 26 from 2:00-4:00pm
In an era before most people could afford automobiles, the trolley provided economical mass transit. Dreamt to run from Suffern through Paterson and into New York City, the North Jersey Rapid Transit Trolley ran from 1908 and 1928. Its unfortunate demise came when two trolley’s collided tragically head-on in Glen Rock. Yet, the tracks lived on to service the Trans-Siberian Railway that ran from Moscow to Vladivostok.
See the fascinating trolley artifacts of the North Jersey Electric Railway Historical Society on special loan from the Liberty Historic Railway. View the incredible one-of-a kind, exact-to-scale Hollis Bachman Model Trolley Collection, and delight in the moving miniature NJRT trolley railway. Mahwah’s 1929 Erie Caboose will also be open for special viewing during this exhibit. See it all at the Old Station Museum located at Old Station Lane, adjacent to the Mahwah train station, Ramapo Avenue. Open Sundays 2pm – 4pm, June 26 – Sept 26. Suggested donation $3.00 adults, children free.
The Mahwah Veterans Project
The Mahwah Museum started a Veterans Project in 2020 to build an archive of biographical information on the men and women who served in the military. The Museum has some information on soldiers who served in the Civil War and World War I but hopes to document the military service of our town in a more systematic way. To do that we need your help!
If you are a veteran or currently serving in the military, we would love to add you to the list and if you like, schedule oral history interviews. These need not be in person, but can be via Zoom or telephone, or e-mail/snail mail. Please print out this survey, complete and send to Mahwah Museum, 201 Franklin Turnpike, Mahwah, NJ, or email answers to veteranproject@mahwahmuseum.org.
