Dumont NJ, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of JEFFREY DANIELS (DOB: 11/01/1983; single; delivery associate) of 310 Knickerbocker Road, Dumont, NJ, on charges of Murder, Possession Of A Weapon For An Unlawful Purpose, and Endangering The Welfare Of A Child. The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Robert Anzilotti, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office under the direction of Sheriff Anthony Cureton, and the Dumont Police Department under the direction of Chief Michael Connor.
On Tuesday, June 16, 2020, at approximately 12:20 a.m., the Dumont Police Department received a 911 call in reference to a welfare check at the residence of Michelle Burns of 310 Knickerbocker Road in Dumont. The 911 caller reported that she observed the victim’s child wandering through the courtyard of 310 Knickerbocker Road shortly after midnight. Upon their arrival, police officers located the child in the courtyard.
Officers spoke to an individual who advised them that she had been attempting to call Michelle Burns on her cellular telephone, but that Ms. Burns was not answering. She also reported that she heard arguing coming from inside Ms. Burns’ apartment, where she resided with her boyfriend, JEFFREY DANIELS, earlier in the evening. The individual also advised the officers that DANIELS had knocked on her door while carrying two small children and had asked for a ride.
Officers entered Ms. Burns’ apartment to conduct a welfare check and found her deceased. She had been stabbed in the neck with a kitchen knife. The Dumont Police Department then notified the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Bergen County Sheriff’s Department Bureau of Criminal Investigations.
Shortly thereafter, the Closter Police Department notified the Dumont Police Department that DANIELS had been located in Closter where he was attempting to knock on the front door of a residence. Both children were with DANIELS and unharmed. They were transported via ambulance to Hackensack University Medical Center, and DANIELS was taken into custody.
On Tuesday, June 16, 2020, JEFFREY DANIELS was arrested and charged with one count of Murder, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, a 1st degree crime; one count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4A, a 2nd degree crime; and one count of Possession Of A Weapon For An Unlawful Purpose, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4D, a 3rd degree crime. He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, NJ.
Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and he would like to thank the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and the Dumont Police Department for their assistance in this investigation.
