Glen Rock NJ, we picked this up from the Borough of Glen Rock Facebook page and we though it was good advise for all.
A reminder about tree care from the Glen Rock Shade Tree Advisory Committee:
Many residents tie ribbons around trees to express their support for various worthy causes. This can cause problems for the trees if the ribbons are tied too tight or left on for too long. Remember that the diameter of the trunk increases as a tree grows. Because a tree’s circulatory system is right beneath the bark, a tree can actually be strangled by a ribbon that’s tied too tight.
Also one shouldn’t hook up a hammock to the town’s tree in backyard with hardware. Had a former newly NYC transplant neighbor who used metal hardware around the trunk of a town tree and another tree to hook up his hammock 7 yrs ago. Took it down when put house up for sale 2 yrs ago. By then the metal bands were already embedded into the trees trunks and he couldn’t remove bands. The bark grew over metal bands, choking the tree and yes eventually many tree limbs started to break off the trees. Both trees had to be cut down.
Typical NYC dope.
