The residential structure, located at 482 Goffle Road and reportedly built in 1889, was utterly destroyed by the fast-moving blaze.

The Inferno and Emergency Response

The emergency call came in around 1:00 p.m. reporting a fire at the old two-family residence. According to Hawthorne Police Capt. Robert King, firefighters arrived to find heavy flames already consuming the structure.

The intensity of the fire quickly escalated, reaching a two- or three-alarm status as fire departments from Hawthorne and several neighboring Bergen and Passaic County municipalities rushed to the scene.

Reports from the scene tragically confirmed that the roof and the rear of the historic home suffered a collapse as firefighters battled the stubborn blaze well into the early evening.

One Occupant Injured, Investigation Underway

Authorities confirmed that all occupants of the two-family home were successfully evacuated shortly after the fire was reported.

  • Injury Report: One male occupant, in his 40s, sustained a minor injury during the incident. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, though no serious injuries were reported among the residents or emergency personnel.

  • Response: Hawthorne Police and the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office provided crucial traffic and crowd control, fully closing Goffle Road between Diamond Bridge Avenue and Warburton Avenue while rescue efforts and overhaul activities were underway.

  • Cause: The exact cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

This devastating incident marks a significant loss of local architectural history and highlights the critical work of North Jersey’s tireless first responders.
