TEANECK, NJ — A terrifying accident unfolded on Thursday morning, August 14, 2025, when a massive tree branch snapped and fell near the intersection of Sussex Road and Churchill Road, trapping pedestrians and injuring multiple people, according to the Teaneck Police Department.
Authorities say multiple 911 calls came in around 8:03 AM, prompting a rapid response from Teaneck Police, the Teaneck Fire Department, Department of Public Works, Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Bergen Hatzalah, and Holy Name Medical Center paramedics.
Three Women Injured, Two Trapped Beneath the Branch
Two women, ages 44 and 45, both from Bergenfield, were walking on the sidewalk when the large branch broke off, crashing down and trapping them beneath its weight. A third woman, 50, from Ridgefield Park, was struck while walking on the opposite side of the street but was not trapped.
The branch also smashed into the roof of a Tesla, shattering glass and injuring a 36-year-old man who suffered minor cuts. His 4-year-old daughter, who was inside the car, was thankfully unharmed.
Residents Describe the Chaos
“Boom! The house was shaking — I thought it was an earthquake,” said Inna Rossina, a Teaneck resident who witnessed the fall. She immediately called 911 as neighbors ran to help.
The falling branch also took down power lines to a nearby home.
Quick Action by First Responders and Bystanders
While on scene, a police officer flagged down a passing tree service truck, whose crew assisted in cutting through the branch to speed up the rescue. Five officers worked together to lift sections of the massive limb and free the trapped women.
Both women sustained serious injuries and were transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, where they are expected to recover. The third woman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
