PARAMUS, NJ — Big changes are coming to the streets of Paramus. Mayor Christopher DiPiazza and the Borough Council have unveiled a comprehensive safety initiative designed to protect pedestrians, students, and commuters alike. From a massive sidewalk restoration project to stricter school zone enforcement, the administration is prioritizing a “safety-first” infrastructure.
The 600-Sidewalk Restoration Project
Walking in Paramus is about to get a lot smoother. The Borough has officially committed to repairing 600 sidewalks town-wide in 2027.
Following a competitive bidding process, the contract was awarded to La Forza Construction for $380,000. Mayor DiPiazza took to social media to share the news, highlighting the administration’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and infrastructure health.
“Happy to share that this administration committed to fixing over 600 sidewalks this coming year, awarding the work to the lowest bidder after a competitive process,” said Mayor DiPiazza.
Slowing Down for Student Safety
One of the most significant proposals on the table involves a major shift in local traffic laws. Because the majority of Paramus schools are located on busy main roads, Mayor DiPiazza is calling for speed limits to be reduced to 15 mph in school zones.
The Plan:
-
Targeted Hours: The 15 mph limit would be strictly enforced during peak drop-off and pick-up times.
-
Expert Review: Chief of Police Robert Guidetti and the PPD Traffic Division are currently conducting a full traffic safety review to determine the most effective implementation.
High-Tech Crosswalks on the Horizon
In addition to sidewalk repairs, officials are looking at the intersection of Midland Avenue and Van Binsberger Boulevard as a candidate for a modern safety upgrade.
The Borough is discussing the installation of a solar-powered blinking crosswalk sign. These “Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacons” (RRFBs) are proven to increase driver yield rates significantly, providing a sustainable and high-visibility solution for one of the town’s busier crossings.
Why This Matters for Paramus Residents
These updates represent a multi-pronged approach to urban planning:
-
Home Value & Accessibility: Repaired sidewalks improve neighborhood aesthetics and ADA compliance.
-
Child Safety: Lower speed limits directly reduce the risk of accidents in high-activity zones.
-
Sustainability: Utilizing solar-powered technology for traffic signals reduces long-term energy costs for the Borough.

We need a portal in ridgewood to report broken sidewalks, corners blocked by bushes, vegetation encroaching on sidewalks/streets (LOTS OF THIS AROUND) and general property violations such as peeling paint and foot tall grass/weeds.
Ridgewood used to be known for its manicured properly maintained properties… sadly the newbies who arrive here from apartments don’t give a sh*t
