Ridgewood NJ, a ciliate called Halteria has been found eating viruses. Viruses are made out of nucleic acids and contain a lot of nitrogen and phosphorous, making them a good source of raw materials. Halteria is the first known vivovore, but it is unlikely to be the only one out there.
The ciliates are a group of alveolates characterized by the presence of hair-like organelles called cilia, which are identical in structure to eukaryotic flagella, but are in general shorter and present in much larger numbers, with a different undulating pattern than flagella
A virovore is an organism which obtains energy and nutrients from the consumption of viruses. The term technically refers to organisms which primarily or solely consume viruses but currently only includes organisms which derive partial nutritional benefit from the consumption of viruses, akin to a form of microbiological omnivory. Virovory is the most recently discovered form of sustenance that a living organism can rely upon for its energy needs.
