Ridgewood NJ, after years of requests, the Ridgewood Fire Department is thrilled to announce the adoption of a firehouse dog! Say hello to Glen, named after the street where fire headquarters has stood for over 30 years.
Glen will be trained to assist around the firehouse and will even accompany firefighters on calls. This four-legged hero is more than just a mascot—he’s part of the team!
The Legacy of Firehouse Dogs
Firehouse dogs have played a vital role in firefighting history for centuries. From guiding horse-drawn fire engines through busy streets to offering companionship and morale boosts, these canines have been essential firefighting partners.
Why Are Dalmatians the Classic Firehouse Dog?
🐾 A Longstanding Tradition:
The Dalmatian’s association with firefighting dates back almost two centuries when they ran alongside horse-drawn fire engines, clearing the way and keeping horses calm. Even after motorized fire trucks replaced horses, Dalmatians remained a staple in firehouses.
🐾 Famous Firehouse Pups:
Some legendary fire dogs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries include Jack the Bum, Spot, and Mike, known for their bravery and dedication.

While no longer needed for horse herding, firehouse dogs like Glen continue to offer companionship, stress relief, and a sense of tradition in fire stations across the country.
