Ridgewood, NJ — The Ridgewood Professional Firefighters FMBA Local 47 continues its Meet the Members Monday series, spotlighting the dedicated men and women who protect the community. This week, the spotlight is on Firefighter/EMT Oscar Martinez, a proud member of Platoon C since 2015.
From Army Medic to Firefighter
Martinez’s journey into firefighting began after his service as a medic in the Army. The transition felt natural. “Firefighting seemed to be the perfect fit for a similar experience,” he shared. “I was right.”
Inspiration and Motivation
For Martinez, the greatest influence in his life comes from his children. “They’re always watching for inconsistencies. They are a mirror of truth for me, which motivates me to strive to be the best version of myself.”
Life Beyond the Firehouse
When he’s not on duty, Martinez enjoys nature walks, sunbathing, and playing outside with his kids. His personal goals include staying flexible to prevent injuries and maintaining the energy to play alongside his children.
Staying Prepared
Firefighting demands both physical and mental resilience. Martinez trains daily and practices meditation to keep his mind and body sharp. “I perform some type of exercise every day and meditate in order to keep my nervous system sharp.”

Martinez lives by the saying: “The only thing constant is change.”
