The Ridgewood Council will consider adding a menorah to its winter holiday display decorations, a move that many believe, if approved, would promote the village’s cultural and religious diversity.

Leaders of the Ridgewood Menorah Committee formally presented their idea to the governing body Wednesday night, asking council members for their blessings to begin preparations for this year’s holiday season. The menorah is a nine-branched lamp stand, one of the most notable symbols used during the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah.

The presentation was offered with a sense of urgency, as the eight-day Jewish feast arrives earlier than usual this year, officially beginning before Thanksgiving on the evening of Nov. 27. But Mayor Paul Aronsohn said the council would table its discussion until the first meeting of September, saying the village is obligated to review any potential legal issues, among other reasons.

  1. Menorah, menorah…yes, that’s good! Add a frosty the snowman, a bunch of hanging snowflakes, and a crech scene and we’ve got a holiday display that will meet the ACLU’s high standards for constitutionality!

  2. Good. Now can we start singing real Christmas Carols instead of santa songs?

  3. Oh you crazy Ibrihamic cultists! When will you ever learn?

  4. Is that even a word?

  5. There are a few ways to spell “Abraham”. They all refer to a misguided primitive goat herder who lived in the middle east a couple thousand years ago who started a myth that for whatever reason has lived on to the present day.

Kind of like L Ron Hubbard or John Smith, only way back in the day.

No matter: I am sure if there were no religion, we’d find an alternate reason to kill one another by the millions, or get outraged about the customs used to celebrate the winter solstice.

  6. As long as there is a nativity scene too, I have no problem with a menorah. But there can’t be a double standard. A menorah is a religious symbol representing a miracle as is the nativity scene. The “Holiday Tree” is not a religious symbol, and Santa (although based on a saint) has been throughly washed of any religious symbolism. Keep in mind though, atheists will sue over any religious symbol used by our village, and other religious groups will demand their religious symbols be displayed as well (won’t it be fun to have to explain Satan praising decorations to our kids).

  7. Rob is anti-religion! In other news, the sun rose this morning.

  8. I agree. The Ridgewood Crech Committee should get its act together to ensure that this year’s holiday display does not promote a specific religious faith and thereby violate the constitutional tenet of freedom from religion . A nativity scene must be added.
