Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think like humans and mimic their actions. The term may also be applied to any machine that exhibits traits associated with a human mind such as learning and problem-solving.
The investment will allow both companies to commercialize advanced artificial intelligence technologies and allow Microsoft to pursue a potential edge against competitor Google for the future of internet search. Microsoft was previously reported to be launching a ChatGPT-powered version of Bing in its bid to rival Google’s Knowledge Graph (see 101), which helps produce instant answers to Google users’ questions.
Microsoft plans to continue to incorporate OpenAI’s models across its products, which include Microsoft-owned GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Designer, while OpenAI will continue to exclusively use Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform as it improves and scales existing technologies, including text generator GPT, image generator DALL-E, and text-to-code generator Codex.
Competitor Google plans to unveil more than 20 projects powered by artificial intelligence this year. One of the projects will be a version of its search engine with chatbot features. The company recently announced that it will lay off more than 12,000 employees and focus on AI as a domain of primary importance. Some of the AI projects are set to debut during Google’s annual I/O event in May.
