A terrifying multi-vehicle crash on Route 80 West turned into a rescue mission Sunday afternoon after a GMC Denali was launched over a guardrail and down a steep wooded ravine.
ELMWOOD PARK, NJ — Commuters on Route 80 witnessed a harrowing scene on Sunday, April 5, 2026, when a multi-car collision sent one vehicle careening off the highway and down a dangerous embankment.
The Crash: A Tumble Through the Trees
The incident occurred Sunday afternoon on the westbound side of Route 80 in Elmwood Park. According to Steiner reports, the force of the multi-vehicle impact was so severe that a GMC Denali was forced over the guide rail.
The heavy SUV tumbled down a steep embankment, striking numerous trees and rolling over at least once before finally coming to a rest right-side up near Linden Avenue.
Miraculous Escape for Occupants
Despite the violence of the rollover and the steep drop-off from the highway, the driver of the Denali escaped with what authorities are describing as minor injuries. Elmwood Park EMS provided immediate on-scene care before transporting the occupant to a local hospital for evaluation.
A second vehicle involved in the pileup, a Mazda 4-door sedan, was found on the right shoulder of Route 80 with significant rear-end damage.
