Montvale NJ, Montvale commuters are facing a frozen mess this morning as sub-zero temperatures push Bergen County’s aging infrastructure past the breaking point. Montvale Police have confirmed two major water main bursts within the last 24 hours, leading to significant road closures and hazardous icy conditions.

As New Jersey shivers through a week of brutal cold, these incidents are part of a larger wave of pipe failures across the state, from Haledon to Edison.
Major Road Closures & Traffic Alerts
If you are traveling through Montvale today, local authorities advise avoiding the following areas entirely:
-
Chestnut Ridge Road & Grand Avenue: The break occurred around midnight. Eastbound lanes are fully closed. While westbound traffic is squeezed into a single lane, heavy delays are expected. Note: The Garden State Parkway entrance remains open for now.
-
Grand Avenue (between Pascack and Kinderkamack Roads): A second break has caused water to leak across the roadway. Police warn this section will likely be shut down in both directions to allow for repairs.
Why the Cold is “Snapping” New Jersey’s Pipes
The recent “flash freeze” is the primary culprit behind the sudden surge in bursts. According to Debra Vial, spokesperson for Veolia Water, the physics of the cold are working against the infrastructure.
“Rapid swings from mild to bitter cold cause the ground to contract, increasing stress on the pipe,” Vial explained.
When the soil shifts due to freezing, older cast-iron pipes—which make up much of Bergen County’s 3,000-mile network—simply cannot flex, leading to a “snap” or longitudinal split.
The “Ice Rink” Factor
Unlike summer main breaks, winter bursts create a secondary hazard: instant ice. Montvale township officials have warned that the gushing water has already frozen over several stretches of road, making them impassable even for heavy vehicles until salt and plow crews can clear the layers of ice.
Statewide Infrastructure Crisis
Montvale is not alone. In just the past week, water main failures have been reported in:
-
Passaic & Morris Counties: Haledon, Butler (Route 23), and Boonton.
-
Essex & Bergen Counties: West Orange, Glen Rock, Livingston, and Hanover.
-
Middlesex County: Edison.
Veolia Water, which serves over 1 million residents in New Jersey, has already responded to 13 major breaks since the weekend storm.
