East Rutherfrod Nj, a quiet morning on Prospect Terrace turned into a multi-agency emergency scene after a basement fire broke out at a local residence. Thanks to a rapid response from the East Rutherford Fire Department and surrounding mutual aid, the blaze was contained before it could consume the entire structure.
The incident occurred late Friday morning, January 2, 2026, marking a busy start to the new year for local first responders.
“Working Fire” Declared Upon Arrival
The call came in at 11:23 a.m. reporting a smoke condition in the basement of a home on the 0-100 block of Prospect Terrace. When Engine 3 arrived on the scene, firefighters were met with visible smoke billowing from the lower level.
Realizing the potential for the fire to spread through the walls of the residential structure, a “Working Fire” was transmitted immediately. A second alarm was requested shortly after, triggering a surge of support from neighboring towns to assist in the fight.
Aggressive Attack Saves the Structure
Approximately 15 firefighters and four fire trucks converged on the scene. Crews stretched hose lines into the basement to locate the seat of the fire.
-
Fast Action: Firefighters successfully “knocked down” the main body of the fire within 30 minutes.
-
Medical Assistance: East Rutherford Fire Chief Michael Felton confirmed that EMS units were on standby at the scene and assisted at least one individual who was near the fire at the time of the outbreak.
-
Coverage: While East Rutherford crews battled the blaze, third-alarm mutual aid companies, including units from Wood-Ridge, provided station coverage to ensure the rest of the borough remained protected.
Investigation Underway
By 12:30 p.m., the scene was placed under control, and mutual aid units were released. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the local fire marshal. While the basement sustained fire and smoke damage, the quick “knockdown” prevented the flames from reaching the upper living quarters of the home.
Winter Fire Safety Tip
Basement fires are often linked to heating systems, water heaters, or electrical overloads during the cold winter months. Chief Felton and local fire officials remind residents to keep the area around furnaces clear of flammable materials and ensure smoke detectors are functioning on every level of the home—including the basement.
