N.J. asks for relief on NCLB

It’s no surprise that more schools, not fewer, are on the state Department of Education’s latest annual Adequate Yearly Progress report, released Thursday along with a draft outline of its waiver application to the federal DOE for relief from some provisions of No Child Left Behind.

School officials have long complained that it’s impossible to comply with the federal NCLB legislation, signed by President George W. Bush in 2002. It sets a 2014 deadline for all children to achieve at grade level, based on state standardized test results, in grades three through eight and grade 11.  (Rothschild, Gannett)
