RIDGEWOOD, NJ – The spirit of sacrifice and gratitude filled the air in Ridgewood this past Sunday as the Village came together for a deeply moving ceremony to honor our nation’s Gold Star Families. Understanding the Meaning of the Gold Star

The term “Gold Star Family” carries profound historical and emotional weight, signifying a family’s loss and honor.

The practice originated with the Blue Star Service Flag, which military families displayed when a loved one was serving in the Armed Forces. When that service member died in the line of duty, a gold star was sewn over the blue star.

Today, a Gold Star Family is an immediate family member who experienced the loss of a loved one in active-duty military service, including:

  • Spouses (widows, widowers)
  • Parents (including step- and adoptive parents)
  • Children (including step- and adopted children)
  • Siblings (including half- and step-siblings)

Honoring a Courageous Legacy

The ceremony served as a powerful reminder that while the service member made the supreme sacrifice, their family endures a lasting and unique loss. By gathering, the Ridgewood community reinforced its commitment that the courage, service, and legacy of these fallen heroes will never be forgotten.

Gold Star Families are officially recognized through a Congressional Act, making them eligible to receive the Gold Star Lapel Pin and the Gold Star Service Flag—symbols authorized for display to honor their loved one’s ultimate sacrifice.

The gathering took place on the last Sunday of September, which is traditionally observed as National Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, a time specifically dedicated to acknowledging their strength and profound loss.

The Ridgewood American Legion encourages all residents to continue showing their support and gratitude for these families, whose sacrifice is foundational to our freedom.
