Ridgewood NJ, loneliness is more than just a passing feeling; it’s a serious public health issue with a significant impact on both mental and physical well-being. A new study has revealed an alarming reality for the Garden State: over 551,000 New Jersey residents are living in a state of constant, chronic loneliness.

The research, conducted by  A Mission for Michael using County Health Rankings data and survey insights, shines a light on the often-hidden epidemic of isolation. The findings reveal that while loneliness isn’t evenly distributed across the state, it’s a persistent problem for many.

The Loneliness Landscape in New Jersey

The study paints a striking picture:

  • 24% of all New Jerseyans report feeling lonely.
  • A staggering 7.4%—which translates to over half a million people—say they are “always lonely.”

This relentless form of isolation can have a dramatic effect on a person’s quality of life. The research also pinpointed the counties where chronic loneliness is most prevalent, highlighting areas where community support is most urgently needed.

New Jersey’s Loneliest Counties

According to the study, the top five counties with the highest proportion of residents who are “always lonely” are:

  1. Cumberland: 8.4%
  2. Passaic: 8.4%
  3. Sussex: 8.4%
  4. Essex: 8.2%
  5. Hudson: 8.2%

On the other hand, some counties have a smaller proportion of residents who report feeling chronically lonely, suggesting stronger community connections or different demographic factors at play.

Counties with the Lowest Chronic Loneliness

  • Monmouth: 6.7%
  • Morris: 7%
  • Union: 7.2%
  • Mercer: 7.2%
  • Somerset: 7.4%

Why Connection Matters More Than Ever

As the research shows, loneliness isn’t just an occasional feeling for many; it’s a constant burden. According to Anand Mehta, an executive director at AMFM Healthcare, “Loneliness can feel overwhelming… That’s why professional treatment and support are so vital—because no one should have to manage the weight of loneliness on their own.”

These findings are a powerful call to action for communities across New Jersey. They underscore the importance of building and strengthening social connections and ensuring that resources are available for those who are struggling with isolation.

  1. Democrats are the primary reason we’re lonely. They don’t want us to be connected to anything that is real.
