Trenton NJ, New Jersey Restaurant & Hospitality Association President and CEO Dana Lancellotti has issued the following statement regarding Governor Murphy signing Assembly Bill 6246 into law:
“The New Jersey Restaurant & Hospitality Association membership is extremely disappointed to learn that Governor Murphy signed A6246 into law. This legislation was introduced just weeks ago, quickly pushed through legislative committees that do not pertain to the hospitality industry and voted on by lawmakers who, despite sharing their concerns about the legislation, still voted in favor of the legislation in order to push it through both Houses. Moreover, this law is just another example of an egregious act of government overreach that impacts small businesses.
“Hospitality continues to be one of the hardest-hit industries as the global pandemic continues. Instead of providing much-needed assistance to the industry, the Murphy Administration instead turned its back on our hoteliers by robbing them of the ability to make timely and needed staffing adjustments in one of the toughest labor markets in recent history. This law will harm customer service, place more strain on already struggling hotels and hamper the industry’s recovery when hotel employees and small business owners need it the most.”
NJBIA President and CEO Michele Siekerka issued the following statement regarding A-6246/S-4295: Concerns changes in control of hotels and disruptions of hotel services
“Anyone who owns a private business and who one day envisions selling it should be alarmed by this law, as it essentially allows government to dictate employment conditions on those transactions.
“This particular law will now require a new owner of a hotel to offer employment for each worker previously employed by the selling owner, with no reduction of wages or benefits for 90 days. It also mandates the retention of these employees for an indefinite period of time beyond those 90 days.
“It should not be the place of government to dictate levels of employment and previously negotiated wages and benefits. It should not be the role of government to limit managerial discretion of a private business, which could actually impact the value of a property.
“The troubled hospitality industry is the immediate victim of this action. But it’s only a matter of time before legislative efforts are made to make other industries fall prey to this intrusive mandate, which further solidifies New Jersey’s reputation as having the worst business climate in the country.”
This is what type of person Murphy is. He wants to run your lives like he is the king and every resident in NJ is a serf . The the urban areas voted for him along with a few uneducated idiots from the suburbs. Now you have to live with your bad decision from the election. I wonder how many business owners voted for him?
Voters knew by Murphy’s past actions what kind of governor & man he was. Yet, he was re-elected, you reap what you sow.
Dumbest Governor in the country. Anti business. Anti growth.
To me this seems like a great protection for NJ workers and NJ investments. How horrible would it be to work your way up in a business only to have the owner sell it and as a worker you are told that starting tomorrow you either have no job or you have to take a 50% decrease in pay. This law give NJ’s workers 90 days to either find new employment or sign a contract with the new owners for their current pay. This stops businesses from reaping great rewards off the backs of hard-working men and women.
Governor should pay the overhead cost to run a business for all these businesses that are losing staff due to the ridiculous unwarranted mask and vaccine mandates!
