TRENTON, NJ — As thousands of New Jersey residents and visitors prepare to celebrate the unofficial end of summer, the New Jersey State Police are stepping up enforcement on the roads and waterways this Labor Day weekend to keep communities safe.
From 6:00 p.m. Friday, August 29 through 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 2, more than 140 additional state troopers will be deployed across New Jersey. Their focus: cracking down on aggressive driving, speeding, distracted driving, seatbelt violations, and driving while impaired.
Sobering Reminder: Last Year’s Deadly Crashes
During the 2024 Labor Day holiday, four of eight fatal crashes in New Jersey were linked to alcohol or drug impairment. Authorities stress that these are preventable tragedies. Motorists are urged to plan ahead by:
-
Using a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft
-
Designating a sober driver
-
Staying overnight instead of driving impaired
“One responsible choice can save a life,” officials warned.
Extra Enforcement on New Jersey Waters
With sunny skies and heavy turnout expected, the State Police Marine Services Bureau will also increase patrols on lakes, rivers, and coastal waters. Troopers will be on the lookout for:
-
Impaired boat operators
-
Reckless use of personal watercraft
-
Proper boating licenses
Unsafe boating can carry deadly consequences, authorities reminded holiday travelers.
Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility
Colonel Patrick J. Callahan, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, emphasized the importance of community cooperation:
“We have over 140 additional troopers on patrol this Labor Day weekend as part of our ongoing effort to keep families and communities safe, but we cannot do it alone. Every driver has the power to make responsible choices behind the wheel. Even one fatality is one too many.”
Bottom Line
Labor Day is a time for family, friends, and celebration—but it’s also one of the busiest and most dangerous travel weekends of the year. New Jersey officials urge all drivers and boaters to make smart choices so the summer of 2025 ends safely.
