Albany NY , New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued an executive order Tuesday ahead of an expected increase in asylum seekers that she said will allow the state to mobilize more National Guard members and to quickly react to food and supply needs.

The Democratic governor’s order came two days before the U.S. government will end pandemic-related restrictions on people requesting asylum at the border, known as Title 42, under which migrants have been expelled from the country.

Veteran federal agent Brandon Budlong claims  New York’s sanctuary policies have made it a magnet for those entering the country without authorization. New York’s decision to make undocumented immigrants eligible for driver’s licenses and its status as a sanctuary state “totally incentivizes” the influx of undocumented immigrants into the state, said Budlong, a U.S. Border Patrol agent who is the president of the National Border Patrol Council Local 2724.“Because of the Green Light law (the New York statute that qualified undocumented immigrants for New York driver’s licenses) we can’t even access the motor vehicle database because we enforce immigration policies and laws,” Budlong said. “It makes it very hard for us to catch anyone after the fact.”

New York City has already been straining to handle an influx of about 60,000 asylum seekers since last spring. The administration of Mayor Eric Adams has been using hotels within the city to house some migrants. And last week, the administration announced plans to send 300 asylum seekers to two hotels north of the city, though County officials have taken actions to block the move.

Hochul said the order declaring a “state disaster emergency” will allow New York to mobilize an additional 500 members of the National Guard in addition to the roughly 1,000 already providing logistical and operational support. She said it also will allow the state and localities to quickly purchase necessary food and equipment.

New York’s recently approved state budget includes about $1 billion to help New York City with “asylum seekers” ie… illegal immigrants .

The order will be in effect through June 8.

  1. There should be a federal law which does not allow “sanctuary” cities. You want to come into this country to live, you need to come in legally just as my ancestors did. It seems undocumented individuals get more assistance and perks than American citizens and immigrants who come here legally. And who’s paying for it all? You want to help balance the budget Washington, let’s start by getting rid of the government assistance for the undocumented. Just a thought.

      1. What an incredibly uneducated and flat-out lazy viewpoint. So easy to shoot out this nonsense and feed the narrative. Do better, then people might actually take your thoughts a bit more seriously.

    1. Longer than that. Before that there were all the Italians and Irish moving in.(shudder)

      1. Three big differences that make your comment appear silly.
        1) They were legal.
        2) There were no “social services” in place for them.
        3) No governor used the Nat’l Guard (paid for by taxpayers to serve the citizens) as Welcome Wagon for people 85% of whom won’t show up to their court date for asylum where 99% of those who do will have their invalid claim rejected.
