Newark NJ, TSA officers at Newark Liberty International Airport recently intercepted their first firearm of the year at a security checkpoint, marking a strong start to maintaining passenger safety in 2025.
TSA’s Mission: Ensuring Safety First
“Our officers are good at their job, and they are focused on the mission,” said Thomas Carter, TSA’s Federal Security Director for New Jersey.
The individual caught with the firearm was found to have three prohibited items, an incident Carter called “absolutely inexcusable.”
Consequences for Carrying Firearms at TSA Checkpoints
The arrested traveler now faces a steep federal civil penalty that could amount to thousands of dollars.
“Not only was this individual arrested, but he also faces a stiff financial penalty that could cost him thousands,” Carter stated.
The TSA imposes penalties of up to $15,000 for carrying weapons through a security checkpoint, even for those with concealed carry permits. Firearms are prohibited in airplane cabins regardless of permits.
Rules for Flying with Firearms
TSA regulations allow passengers to transport firearms only under specific conditions:
- Unloaded firearms must be packed in a locked, hard-sided case.
- Passengers must declare the firearm to the airline during check-in.
- The firearm will travel as checked baggage, not in the cabin.
Record Year for TSA Enforcement
Newark TSA officers stopped a record 21 firearms in 2024, underscoring the ongoing need for vigilance and traveler compliance.
Carter emphasized the importance of knowing what’s in your bag before arriving at security.
Resources for Travelers
Travelers unsure about what they can bring onboard can consult TSA’s “Can I Bring?” tool available on their website. A full list of civil penalties for illegal items is also online, helping passengers prepare for a smooth security process.
Safety First: Avoid Costly Mistakes
“Travelers always need to know the contents of their carry-on bag prior to coming to the security checkpoint,” Carter reminded.
By understanding and following TSA guidelines, passengers can avoid costly mistakes and ensure a safe travel experience.
