John Alite and Bridgewater resident Stephen Locrotondo are facing severe criminal charges following an intensive probe into an alleged illegal loan-sharking and extortion scheme.

Here are the details behind the arrests, the charges, and the official statements from New Jersey law enforcement.


The Accusations: Extortion, Usury, and Corporate Misconduct

According to Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, the arrests take aim at unlawful financial practices, intimidation, and the abuse of public trust.

John Alite (63) – Englishtown, NJ

Alite, an Englishtown councilman, was arrested on June 19, 2026. State authorities have leveled heavy second-degree charges against him, alleging he operated an illegal high-interest lending scheme and used his business entity to facilitate it. His charges include:

  • Theft by Extortion (Second Degree)

  • Corporate Misconduct (Second Degree)

  • Usury (Second Degree)

  • Terroristic Threats

State prosecutors allege that Alite issued loans with interest rates far exceeding legal maximums. When it came time to collect, he reportedly used threats of violent acts to seize property and money from his victims. Furthermore, authorities allege he misused his company, Straightened-Out Entertainment, Inc., to promote the criminal enterprise.

Stephen Locrotondo (67) – Bridgewater, NJ

Locrotondo was arrested alongside Alite and faces charges related to his alleged role as a co-conspirator in the lending operation. His charges include:

  • Usury

  • Conspiracy

Authorities allege that Locrotondo coordinated closely with Alite, agreeing to illicitly receive interest on the illegal high-rate loans.


NJ Law Enforcement Vows Accountability

The takedown was a coordinated effort between the Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ) and the New Jersey State Police Official Corruption North Unit. Top officials emphasized their commitment to protecting the public from financial exploitation.

“Our office is dedicated to ensuring that all businesses conduct themselves fairly and lawfully. The conduct alleged in this case was anything but, and we will work to hold those who cheat and steal accountable.”

DCJ Director Theresa L. Hilton added that state prosecutors remain steadfast in securing justice for the victims involved.

Jeanne Hengemuhle, Acting Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, underscored the severity of the offenses:

“These offenses strike at the fundamental principles of fairness, accountability, and public trust… Individuals who seek to enrich themselves through intimidation, exploitation, or abuse of power should expect to be held accountable for their actions.”
