Wyckoff NJ, State environmental leaders recently got a firsthand look at local efforts to combat “forever chemicals” in North Jersey’s drinking supply—though local observers couldn’t help but ask a provocative question.

Inside the Ames PFAS Treatment Facility Tour

Ridgewood Water hosted representatives from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) for an educational tour of the Ames PFAS Treatment Facility in Wyckoff, NJ.

Led by Ridgewood Water Director Richard Calbi, the walk-through highlighted the advanced technology being deployed to clean the area’s drinking water:

  • Granular Activated Carbon (GAC): Director Calbi detailed how the facility’s specialized carbon filtration process absorbs and removes regulated per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from the supply.

  • The 2027 Goal: Ridgewood Water shared its proactive timeline to reduce regulated PFAS compounds in treated drinking water to undetectable levels by Q1 2027.

The Elephant in the Room: Did State Officials Take a Sip?

While the technical walkthrough demonstrated significant progress in local water treatment infrastructure, community onlookers left the event asking one key question: Did any of the visiting state officials actually drink a glass of the tap water during their visit?

While demonstration drinks are rarely part of official state tours, public confidence relies on transparency. As local water purveyors invest heavily in GAC technology to meet stringent state and federal standards, residents will be watching closely to see if filtration targets hit their 2027 deadline.
