Trenton NJ, the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee cleared legislation sponsored by Senator Kristin Corrado that would provide additional funding for qualified Code Blue Shelters.
“Code Blue Shelters provide essential services for vulnerable residents during extreme weather conditions,” said Sen. Corrado (R-40). “Legislative changes made in recent years have required warming shelters to open more frequently and use additional resources when temperatures drop below freezing. This bill will help provide more funding to shelters to ensure that they will have the resources they need to operate.”
Key components of the S-972 include:
- Establishing a matching grant program in the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) to increase funding for Code Blue Shelters.
- Requiring organizations to have received a separate grant from a county or municipality no more than 12 months prior to submitting their grant application to the DCA.
- Prohibiting the DCA from issuing matching grants that exceed $50,000.
