Irvington NJ, Earlier this week, State Troopers George Ward and Justin Storie, of Troop “D” Bloomfield Station, used a tourniquet on a man who sustained an injury to his hand in an accident and rushed him to the hospital.
On Monday, June 24, at approximately 8:24 a.m., Tpr. Ward responded to a motor vehicle accident on the Garden State Parkway in Irvington Township, Essex County. No serious injuries were reported but one of the vehicles became disabled in the accident.
While at the scene, the tow truck driver began loading the disabled vehicle onto the flatbed and sustained an injury to his hand. The victim’s finger was severed and he began to lose blood. Tpr. Ward radioed to dispatch requesting advanced life support, but knew he had to attend to the victim’s heavily bleeding finger and applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. A short time later, Tpr. Storie arrived on scene and continued to provide aid.
The troopers were alerted by dispatch that the ambulance was having difficulty getting to the scene because of the heavy traffic. Due to the severity of the injury, Tpr. Ward placed the victim in his troop car and transported him to an area hospital while Tpr. Storie maintained pressure to lessen the loss of blood. The victim was admitted to the hospital where he was last listed in stable condition.
Tpr. Ward and Tpr. Storie used their training and experience to deliver immediate care to the victim and went above an beyond to help prevent further injury!
