Hoboken NJ, NJ Transit Police help rescue man from Hudson River, credit rapid deployment of life saving equipment.

On the night of April 11th, New Jersey Transit Police Officers in District 3 (Hoboken) received reports of a man in the water (Hudson River) outside the terminal. NJTPD Officers responded and observed a man in the river near the Newport walkway. A member of the public had deployed a nearby rescue buoy, but the man was unable to climb out of the rough water.
The officers ran to obtain additional water rescue equipment. They quickly deployed another ring buoy and a ‘Man Overboard Recovery Ladder System’ to provide a way up and out of the current. The man was unable to climb the Man Overboard Recovery Ladder. As a result, multiple NJTPD officers and responding JCFD firefighters hoisted the Man Over Board Recovery Ladder and pulled the man to safety. The subject in this incident was found to be suicidal and was given further help by EMS / Crisis.
We share this incident to raise awareness surrounding the strategically placed ring buoy cases along the waterfront. The ring buoys are accessible to the public for emergencies, and if rapidly deployed, can help save lives. They are in ring buoy stands marked NJTPD (pictured). Be mindful of the available rescue equipment and always dial 911 if you notice any water emergency.
