It’s a new year, so you might expect Bamboozled to offer a list of new scams.

Nope.

The trend we’re seeing is that the same old scams keep popping up, sometimes with a new twist, and we expect the same for the coming year.

Why do scammers keep up the same old tricks? Because people keep falling for them.

Here are Bamboozled’s top five scams to watch for in 2017

5. Trust us! We’re the real thing!

Continue to be cautious of emails that seem to come from legitimate senders.

Before you say you’re too smart to fall for a phishing scam, read on.

Phishing emails often look like they’re coming from a real institution, such as your bank, credit card or utility company.

But they’re imposters.

They often look authentic, using a combination of real company logos and convincing-looking email addresses.

Bamboozled: The new scam Amazon won’t warn you about

If you plan to shop on Amazon.com this holiday season, be warned.

There’s a new scam afoot, and the con artists are using Amazon to steal your money. Based on the number of complaints reported to Bamboozled from across the country in the past few months, the problem is widespread, if not rampant.

Amazon isn’t doing anything about it, according to shoppers who fell victim to the scam.

Given that we’re at the start of the busy holiday shopping season, one might think Amazon wants to warn its customers.

The retail giant is staying silent.

We’ve reported before about fake third-party sellers who lure buyers to leave Amazon’s site when it comes time for payment. Through untraceable wire transfers, the fraudsters take money for items they never deliver.

This time, the scammers are using Amazon gift cards to pull off the fraud.

And it seems to be working beautifully.

The dozens of complaints reported to Bamboozled share essentially the same story. And, the readers agree, Amazon hasn’t done a thing to help.

We reached out to Amazon about these cases and to ask what it’s doing to protect consumers as the holiday shopping season gets underway. It hasn’t responded to our inquiries.

Bamboozled: Does your town charge a hidden fee for some online property tax payments?

Many municipalities allow residents to pay their property taxes online.

But at least two New Jersey municipalities aren’t disclosing the fees that are charged to certain online taxpayers.

The lack of disclosure is a big problem.

Josh Needle of Fanwood said he tried to make an online payment on Aug. 1, the date his property taxes were due.

The system gave the option of paying by credit card or by e-check. He chose the e-check.

Needle said a pop-up message warned there was a $1.05 convenience fee.
