RIDGEWOOD – The captain needed a moment.

The emotions hit Hannah Cermack in the huddle when her turn came to offer closing remarks on one of the most meaningful wins of her career.

An opening week victory felt more like a playoff one for Ridgewood. The top-ranked Maroons (2-0) knocked off the team that ended their last two seasons. They passed their first early test with a hard-fought 7-4 win over Summit on Saturday.

Julia Persche of Summit scored the game-winning goal with 3.4 seconds remaining in the Hilltoppers 6-5 win over Ridgewood in the NJSIAA/Investors Bank/The Lacrosse Ball Store Tournament of Champions’ first round.

The goal came just over a minute after a Jordan Ford goal was disallowed because she was using an illegal stick. Ridgewood challenged the legality of Persche’s stick and it was deemed legal allowing Summit to earn a trip to the TOC final three seconds later.

On Thursday a video was released on youtube, which has sense been taken down by the user, that showed a Summit player appearing to adjust Persche’s stick prior to the stick check being called.

Moorestown, No. 1 in the NJ.com Top 20 found itself in an early hole as it fell behind No. 2 Ridgewood, 6-2, heading into half time. The Quakers needed to make adjustments.

“We just needed to take care of the ball,” Moorestown coach Deanna Knobloch said. “We didn’t take care of the ball in the first half. I think we had 10 turnovers. If you can’t maintain possession of the ball you can’t win in this game. The whole halftime talk was to get possession, slow it down on offense and move the ball.”

Moorestown came out surging in the second half behind Alex O’Donnell, who scored a game-high four goals. O’Donnell potted three goals during a 4-0 run that allowed Moorestown to tie Ridgewood at 6-6. Moorestown had another run after Ridgewood took a 8-6 lead and scored three straight goals from O’Donnell, Abbey Brooksand Melanie Becker to grab a 9-8 lead.
