RIDGEWOOD — Taking the football field before the season-opening game against Passaic last Friday, Ridgewood High School head coach Chuck Johnson had no idea what to expect. With a team that had little varsity experience, there was a sense of the unknown.

Four quarters later, there was a different sense — one of joy. Not only did the Maroons take care of business, but they accomplished a piece of history in the process.

Their 53-6 trouncing of the Indians was surprising in the margin of victory, but it also marked the 200th win of Johnson’s Ridgewood tenure. In his 31st season at the helm, the coach is now 200-105-1 at RHS and 235-124-2 overall, including his six seasons as head coach at Bogota (1978-83).

“I would have been happy with a 28-0 or 35-7 win,” he said. “To do this was more than I expected. We came out without any injuries, too, which is wonderful.”

That means the Maroons (1-0) will be real close to full strength Saturday when they travel to Fair Lawn for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The Cutters (1-0) had a surprising win of their own last week, 22-0 over Clifton.

Ridgewood senior Mitch Campbell, who sat out last game with an injury, will be back at cornerback and running back. Sophomore Jack Kiernan is likely still a week away, and sophomore Alec Jacobson could also be back in a week.

Ridgewood High School to Honor Charlotte Samuels, the youngest swimmer to complete open-water swimming’s Triple Crown

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood High School Junior Charlotte Samuels, the youngest swimmer to complete open-water swimming’s Triple Crown, will be honored by the high school for her accomplishment.

The brief (five-minute) ceremony will take place on RHS Stadium Field on Thursday, October 2 at 6:45 p.m., in advance of the Boys Varsity Football game against John F. Kennedy High School.

In July, Samuels, age 16, circumvented the Island of Manhattan, then went on to swim the Catalina Channel off the coast of California in August, and has now completed the 20-hour swim across the English Channel, landing on the French shore in September.

Ms. Samuels is also a member of the RHS swim team

Ridgewood H.S. Athletic Hall of Fame: 1913 football “Invincibles” to be honored

Editor’s Note: This is the second in a series of stories profiling the 2014 inductees into the Ridgewood High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

RIDGEWOOD — In the era of the “leatherhead” and the infancy of the forward pass, there were few football teams in New Jersey that could match the ability of the Ridgewood High School gridiron standouts of 1913.

Their story would become a legend amongst sports fans who followed the Maroons in those days and beyond. The newspapers called them “Ridgewood’s Invincibles,” and over the last century, their story had been lost but was brought to light again through coincidence. It surfaced after the 2013 Maroon football squad suffered the same fate — 100 years later, almost to the day — as the stalwarts who, in 1913, put on their pads and battled courageously for the honor of RHS.

Ridgewood set to roll out vast cast of gymnasts

RIDGEWOOD — Karen Mendez begins every new gymnastics season with a goal completely unrelated to the numbers on judges’ score sheets.

“I always do my best to get as many of my girls into our meets as possible,” the Ridgewood High School head coach said earlier this week.

That’s why her main concern for 2014 is the number on the Maroons’ roster: 34. This will be the largest team of her seven-year tenure and quite possibly the most talented, too.

“We have a large group of dedicated gymnasts of varying ability levels,” Mendez said, “but they work extremely well together.”

The girls’ priority, meanwhile, has been getting to know all the newcomers. Nine freshmen have joined a squad that brings back 11 seniors, including quad-captains Libby DeVita, Kate Eanelli, Christina Gieselmann and Yurina Harada.

“There are so many girls on the team, it’s hard to keep track,” Gieselmann said at practice Wednesday. “We didn’t even know about the talent we had coming in.”

Plenty is known about the top upperclassmen, on the other hand. Harada is a USAG Level 10 competitor and returning state gold medalist — the last RHS gymnast with such distinctions was Chelsea Steinberg in 2006.

RIDGEWOOD – There was no way to know what to expect as Ridgewood opened the football season Friday night. The Maroons were green as the grass coming in, but after four quarters they were feeling good.

With a completely rebuilt offensive line providing plenty of openings, Ridgewood rushed for 404 yards on the way to a 53-6 victory over Passaic. The victory marked the 200th win at Ridgewood for head coach Chuck Johnson, who is 235-119-2 overall in his career (including five seasons at Bogota).

The game started auspiciously for the Maroons, who lost a fumble on the second play from scrimmage, but they scored on each of their next eight possessions. Cooper Telesco got the first two scores on runs of 65 and 2 yards on the way to 140 rushing yards on six first-half carries.

“It was a great job by the offensive line,” Telesco said of the quintet, each making their first varsity start. “They’ve been working so hard all preseason and they really were getting off the ball.’

Charlotte Samuels cried her way across the English Channel.

She cried because she is small and her challenge was big: A 16-year-old girl chasing a world record, swimming for miles in open water through the blind dark night.

She cried because she was lucky: Most channel attempts require a year of planning and worry, but somehow she hired a boat and a crew in weeks.

She cried because she is loved: As she sprinted the final three miles to France, her parents chanted encouragement every time she lifted her head for air.

In a matter of hours, she would make history by becoming the youngest person ever to achieve the Triple Crown of open-water swimming — completing a swim across the English Channel after circumnavigating Manhattan in June and swimming the Catalina Channel off the coast of California in August.

But as Charlotte Samuels, a 16-year-old from Ridgewood, crept through choppy, frigid water Monday afternoon, that goal seemed impossibly distant. She could see the French coastline. But the land didn’t seem to be getting any closer, she shouted to her mother, Suzanne, who was cheering her on from a tracking boat.

The team on the boat began reading her messages from supporters, Suzanne said in an email. A message from her swimming coach told her to “Keep her head down and keep swimming.”

And so she did.

She sang songs in her head. She thought, at times, that she was sleeping. And she faced swells of 4 to 6 feet that forced her to sprint the last two miles, her mother said.

By the time Charlotte scrambled onto the beach on the French shore around 5 p.m. (11 a.m. New Jersey time), all that seemed like it might have been a dream, she told her mother later. Not only had she reached her goal, she had done all three swims in just over two months, perhaps the shortest span that anyone had ever completed the swimming trifecta, Suzanne said.

The Ridgewood High School girls tennis team begins a new season Saturday at the September Slam Tournament in Livingston, but you can’t blame the Maroons if the venue triggers at least a few reminders of last season’s greatest triumph.

RHS usurped perennial powerhouse and playoff rival Livingston as North 1, Group 4 champion last fall, knocking off the Lancers, 3-2, in the sectional final before losing in the state semifinal to Cherry Hill East, 3-2.

“Last year was a super exciting year,” head coach Medha Kirtane said prior to the team’s practice Wednesday. “The girls did such a good job achieving benchmarks and pushing themselves beyond what they even thought was possible. It’s the first time that group had ever experienced anything like that.”

Ridgewood’s 21-5 record and its first sectional championship since 2005 helped it secure the No. 2 spot in The Record Top 15 rankings.

RIDGEWOOD – What a difference a year makes.

Last season, the Ridgewood High School football team was built for the now, with 31 seniors and expectations of reaching the North 1, Group 5 championship game, which it did.

This season, the Maroons are building toward an uncertain future.

Not only did the bulk of their starters graduate, but four assistant coaches elected not to return, including the offensive and defensive coordinators and the line coach. In their place are a couple of old returning faces in Jim Stroker and Mark Aramburu, plus a group of younger coaches.

“We are green as the grass,” RHS head coach Chuck Johnson said. “There are a lot of unknowns, but it has really been fun so far, and I’m excited to see where this goes.”

The first Maroon victory this season will be the 200th of Johnson’s 31-year career at Ridgewood (he has 35 more wins from his six seasons at Bogota from 1978-83), but milestones are taking a back seat to player development.

Charlotte Samuels, the 16-year-old Ridgewood girl who wants to be the youngest person to complete the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming, will attempt the final leg on Sunday by swimming across the English Channel, her mother, Suzanne Samuels, said today.

Originally she planned to begin the 21-mile swim from England to France at 5 a.m. London time—midnight in New Jersey. But every swimmer in the Channel must be accompanied by a guide boat, and the boat assigned to Samuels was running late, pushing her start time back approximately four hours, said Suzanne Samuels, Charlotte’s mother. Her mother later said they rescheduled the swim for 6 p.m. in the UK – 1 p.m. in New Jersey.

“Delays of this sort are not unusual,” Samuels said, adding that the wait was caused by a British athlete attempting to swim across using the breaststroke. “Charlotte is understandably disappointed, as are we.  But at this point, the weather conditions seem to be favorable for her swim.”

Last month, exhausted by an arduous 20.2-mile swim from Catalina Island to the coast of California, Samuels said she would not attempt the English Channel crossing this year.

SPECIAL TO THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Ridgewood High School Athletic Hall of Fame chairman Jeff Yearing is encouraging people who are intending to purchase a reservation to the Ridgewood High School Athletic Hall of Fame’s Class of 2014 induction ceremony to do so as soon as possible.

Thirteen new inductees will be recognized for their accomplishments on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Brick House on Godwin Avenue in Wyckoff. The celebration begins at 6:30 p.m. with a social hour. Appetizers will be served along with a cash bar. Induction festivities along with dinner are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

“The Ridgewood High School Athletic Hall of Fame wishes to recognize athletes, coaches and special contributors from all eras of the interscholastic athletic program,” Yearing said, “emphasizing their accomplishments, so that others may clearly see, and be inspired by, lives lived in the pursuit of excellence.”

The RHS Athletic Hall of Fame is self-supporting. It is sanctioned by the Ridgewood Board of Education and the Ridgewood Public Schools but receives no supporting funds from the district.

Since inductions began in 2004, the RHS Athletic Hall of Fame has welcomed 58 individual athletes, eight coaches, four special contributors and one team. This year’s class will add 10 individuals, one coach, one athletic team and one special achievement (multi-year group of teams).

R.H.S. Girls Soccer Preview: Ridgewood ready to continue program’s resurgence

After pulling off a major turnaround on the soccer field in 2013, the question facing the players on this year’s Ridgewood High School girls team is simple: Where do they go from here?

The Maroons improved from 8-11 in 2012 to 15-5-2 last season, and they also reached the Bergen County tournament semifinals for the first time in 13 years.

However, leading scorer Darby Kiernan and goalkeeper Olivia Shaw — both of whom earned spots on the North 1 region All-State team last year — as well as a handful of other key seniors are gone. But the raised expectations are not.

“We probably have more soccer depth on this team than we’ve had over the last couple of years,” RHS head coach Jeff Yearing said Tuesday. “The expectations are high.”

The 2013 season provided several reasons for renewed excitement about the team, including a 1-0 win versus Immaculate Heart and two wins over Paramus, the first triumphs against their Big North Freedom Division rival since 2009.

Ridgewood High School to hold soccer marathon for charity
AUGUST 29, 2014    LAST UPDATED: FRIDAY, AUGUST 29, 2014, 12:31 AM

This Sunday, the Ridgewood High School boys and girls soccer programs will host a “Dawn to Dusk” 12-hour marathon soccer match to benefit two local charities, “Go 4 the Goal” and the Social Service Association of Ridgewood and Vicinity, and to help raise money for the RHS soccer programs.

This is the first time in many years that the high school teams will be coming together to host an event to help those in need. The event is planned to kickoff at 7 a.m. at the Ridgewood High School Stadium field, and play will continue until 7 p.m. If the stadium field — which suffered damage during the rainstorm earlier this month — is not repaired by Aug. 31, the Soccer-A-Thon will be held at Benjamin Franklin Middle School.

RHS soccer players will donate their time and energy, and they will solicit sponsorships based on 12 hours of play. Parents will be contributing time as well, helping to organize the event and support the players. Several businesses, including Valley Hospital, Stifel, F.O.R.C.E. Performance Training of Ho-Ho-Kus, Keller Williams and The Fireplace, have agreed to sponsor the event.

According to parent organizer Annette Testa, “We are expecting this event to be a tremendous success, not only in the amount of funds we raise but also in creating a sense of caring and camaraderie within the soccer community.”
