Reader says “sports groups” already have more “skin in the game” than any other organization or group of organizations in town

The “sports groups” already have more “skin in the game” than any other organization or group of organizations in town. They privately raised the funds and paid for the renovation of Maple Park, (A million bucks, the Council didn’t spend a dime and until recently they haven’t spent a dime on maintenance either.) they annually pay for upgrades and renovations to both BOE and Village owned facilities including baseball fields, gymnasiums, and other fields. They have paid for installation of sprinkler systems, drainage, seeding, backstops, backboards, padding, bleachers, scoreboards, lights, and the list goes on and on. The problem with the support is that the BOE and the Village have become dependant on the funds. The HS athletic teams are supported by the sports groups by over $200,000 per year in private funding at least. Sports groups purchase uniforms, pay for coaches, pay for buses, etc…. In return for that support you better believe they are going to demand the best playing surfaces available for their teams.

In regards to paying for the maintance and repairs, the sports groups would probably make that trade in a heart beat. Pay for maintenance and repairs on the turf fields in return for the BOE and Village fulfilling their responsibilities for all of the other items would be a major win for the sports groups and net loss for both the BOE and Village Council.

Revolution in the Air? Glen Rock grassroots group fights turf plan there

Just south of The Wood, yet another grassroots group is fighting yet another multimillion-dollar bonded turf project.

It’s happening all over. (Just saw this; was away last week.) I had a feeling that the huge number of people in Glen Rock who were against that turf project from the start weren’t going to accept their council’s decision not only to let it go through but also, adding financial insult to bad-politics injury, to pay for 90% of the $3 million with tax money instead of 0%, as the sports groups once promised–while promising to raise the funds, which they failed to do.

Last Chance to Fight Turf Field

Sign the petition tonight, June 17 at Starbucks

Many Glen Rock citizens are dismayed with the Mayor and Council’s recent decision to pass a $3,000,000 bond ordinance–without a citizen-wide vote–to fund the synthetic turf athletic field project and accompanying commercial sports complex at Faber Field (which is to include restrictive fencing, unsightly billboards and lighting and revenue-producing commercial concessions and non-resident field rentals).  If you are concerned about the preservation of Glen Rock’s peaceful parkland, cooling green open space, and natural grass fields that are available to all Glen Rockers, please consider signing our Citizen Petition.  You can read a copy of the petition below, and if you are both a Glen Rock resident and registered voter, you may join us in this challenge by signing a hard copy of this document at the following locations both today and tomorrow:

Tuesday June 17th at the Starbuck’s Glen Rock from 6:30 to 8:30 pm

Thank you.

RIDGEWOOD — The Village Council signed off on a cleanup of Maple Park during its meeting Wednesday night.

The turf, which has become hardened from years of storm and floodwater damage, will undergo a complete restoration following a second round of bids on the project.

The cleanup was delayed last year, when the village rejected the sole bid it received for the project. A second round of bids was sought, and the contract was awarded Wednesday to LandTek.
