Doherty, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and former Army officer, said that protests popularized by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick are hypocritical and worthy of condemnation.
“Standing for our national anthem is a sign of respect for the millions of Americans who fought and died for all of us, including Mr. Kaepernick, to live in a free nation.
“For Mr. Kaepernick and other professional athletes to protest while reaping all of the benefits of those sacrifices, including multi-million dollar salaries and lavish lifestyles, reeks of hypocrisy at the highest level.”
