SUV Crashes Head-On into Utility Pole After Driving Down Fair Lawn Sidewalk

Fair Lawn NJ, An afternoon commute took a dramatic turn in Bergen County on Monday when an SUV jumped a curb, traveled down a pedestrian sidewalk, and slammed head-on into a utility pole.
The incident occurred late Monday afternoon, June 1, 2026, at the busy intersection of Fair Lawn Avenue and River Road in Fair Lawn, New Jersey.
According to responding officers from the Fair Lawn Police Department, a white Volkswagen SUV unexpectedly mounted the curb at the intersection. The vehicle then proceeded to travel several feet down the sidewalk running adjacent to a local bank building before its momentum was abruptly stopped by a head-on collision with a utility pole.
Miraculous Escape: No Injuries Reported
Given the location and the time of day, the outcome could have been far worse. Fortunately, Fair Lawn PD confirmed that no crash-related injuries were reported at the scene.
While the Volkswagen sustained heavy front-end damage, the nearby bank building escaped the incident completely unscathed.
Scene Cleanup and Utility Evaluation
The disabled Volkswagen SUV was tightly wedged against the pole following the impact. A flatbed tow truck was called to the scene to carefully extricate the vehicle from its predicament and haul it away.
Because the utility pole absorbed a direct, head-on impact, emergency officials requested assistance from PSE&G’s Electric Division. Utility crews were dispatched to evaluate the structural integrity of the hit pole and ensure the surrounding area remained safe from potential power outages or falling wires.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by local authorities.
