Ridgewood NJ, as we prepare to honor the life and enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Village of Ridgewood has announced several changes to municipal services for the upcoming holiday.

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, all Village offices (excluding emergency services) will be closed on Monday, January 19, 2026. Whether you are planning a “Day of Service” or a quiet holiday Monday, here is your essential guide to local schedule shifts.

Garbage & Recycling: What You Need to Know

If Monday is your usual collection day, you will need to adjust your schedule.

  • No Collections: There will be no garbage or recycling collection on Monday, January 19.

  • Recycling Center: The Village Recycling Center will be closed for the holiday.

  • Resumption: Regular collection cycles and facility hours will resume on Tuesday, January 20.

Village Hall and Municipal Offices

All non-emergency departments—including the Tax Office, Building Department, and Village Clerk—will be closed.

  • Emergency Services: Police, Fire, and EMS will remain fully operational 24/7.

  • Online Services: Residents can still access the Village of Ridgewood website to pay bills or submit non-emergency requests.

Honoring the Legacy of Dr. King

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is more than just a federal holiday; it is recognized as a “Day On, Not a Day Off.” Dr. King, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and pivotal leader of the Civil Rights Movement, dedicated his life to non-violent activism and the pursuit of racial equality.

In Ridgewood, residents are encouraged to reflect on Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community” through local volunteerism and acts of kindness.
