TEANECK, NJ — A New York man was arrested and charged after allegedly harassing and robbing a Teaneck couple in connection with an official government action taken against his business, according to Teaneck Police Chief Andrew McGurr.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on June 17 on Wyndham Road, when a local resident called 911 to report being blocked in their driveway by a known individual. The suspect reportedly reached into their vehicle, grabbed the wife’s cellphone, and fled the scene.
🕵️♂️ Suspect Identified and Arrested
The man, identified as Yair Babayoff, 41, of Flushing, New York, was arrested the following day in New York by New York State Police and later extradited to New Jersey. He is now being held at the Bergen County Corrections and Rehabilitation Center.
📱 Victim Harassed Over Government Action
According to Chief McGurr, Babayoff had been harassing the female victim, a New York state employee, due to a government action taken against his business. Police have not released specific details about the business or the nature of the official action.
When the couple returned home on June 17, Babayoff was allegedly waiting for them, having already blocked their driveway with his car. He reportedly approached the passenger side, grabbed the woman’s arm through the car window, and snatched her cellphone.
The victim suffered minor injuries, including a finger injury and scratches to her arm, but declined medical attention at the scene.
