New York NY, New York City is grappling with a disturbing paradox. While the NYPD celebrates its “safest January on record” for gun violence, the city’s Jewish community is facing a historic surge in targeted violence.
According to new data released by the NYPD, antisemitic hate crimes surged 182% in January 2026—the very first month of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration.
The Numbers: A “Staggering” Spike
The NYPD’s latest statistics reveal a sharp divide in the city’s safety landscape. While murders and shootings have hit all-time lows, the Hate Crimes Task Force has been overwhelmed by a 152% increase in total bias incidents.
-
Anti-Jewish Hate Crimes: 31 incidents in January 2026 (up from 11 in January 2025).
-
Total Hate Crimes: 58 incidents (up from 23 in January 2025).
-
Proportion: Antisemitic attacks accounted for more than half (54%) of all hate crimes in the city, despite Jewish residents making up only about 10% of the population.
Scott Richman, the ADL’s New York Regional Director, described the jump as “staggering,” citing high-profile incidents including a car-ramming at the Chabad headquarters in Crown Heights and the discovery of 73 swastikas at a Boro Park playground.
Political Friction: Mamdani Under Fire
The spike has ignited a firestorm of criticism against Mayor Mamdani, the city’s first Muslim and Democratic Socialist mayor. Critics argue that Mamdani’s past activism—including co-founding a Students for Justice in Palestine chapter and his support for the BDS movement—has created a permissive environment for radicals.
“New York City’s pro-Hamas citizens will most certainly escalate their attacks,” critics have claimed, suggesting that the new leadership at Gracie Mansion is emboldening bad actors.
While Mamdani has publicly vowed to protect all New Yorkers and “stand steadfast alongside Jewish New Yorkers,” his early policy decisions have fueled skepticism. Some community leaders are already calling for federal intervention from President Trump and Attorney General Pamela Bondi to ensure the safety of Jewish citizens if city resources prove insufficient.
NYC Crime Snapshot: January 2026
| Crime Category | Jan 2025 | Jan 2026 | Change |
| Antisemitic Crimes | 11 | 31 | +182% |
| Total Hate Crimes | 23 | 58 | +152% |
| Murders | 30 | 12 | -60% |
| Shooting Incidents | 50 | 40 | -20% |
What’s Next for City Hall?
The ADL and other advocacy groups are urging Mayor Mamdani to immediately appoint a permanent head to the Mayor’s Office to Combat Antisemitism. For many, the next few months will be a litmus test for the Mamdani administration: can a socialist mayor maintain his progressive base while effectively policing a crisis of hate targeting the Jewish community?
As the “Mamdani Monitor” launched by the ADL begins its tracking, all eyes are on the NYPD and City Hall to see if they can break the logjam of bias-motivated violence.

You vote for a Jew Hater you get a Jew Hater.
This is not complicated stuff.
When he needs quality health care, let him choose a commie doctor
The smile of a con man.
Not surprised at all.
Why did the Jews allow him to be mayor in the first place?
they better wake up and stop voting for dems as they historically have. dems do NOTHING for them
