NYC MAN CHARGED WITH LEAVING THE SCENE OF A MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION IN TEANECK

Teaneck NJ, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo announced the arrest of BARRETT D. LEWIS (DOB: 10/26/1963; single; and lab courier) of 9 West 122nd Street, Apt. 1, New York, NY, on charges of Leaving The Scene Of A Motor Vehicle Collision Resulting In Serious Bodily Injury and Endangering The Welfare Of An Injured Victim. The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Robert Anzilotti and the Teaneck Police Department under the direction of Chief Glenn O’Reilly.

At approximately 11:13 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, 2019, the Teaneck Police Department received a report that a pedestrian had been struck by a hit and run vehicle on Teaneck Road at the intersection with Circle Drive. Upon arriving at the scene, officers observed a seriously injured male victim lying in the roadway whose injuries were consistent with having been struck by a motor vehicle. The victim, a 49-year-old male from Passaic, NJ was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he is currently in critical but stable condition. The ensuing investigation by the Bergen CountyProsecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Unit and the Teaneck Police Department revealed that the victim was attempting to cross Teaneck Road when he was struck by a white SUV traveling north. A short time later, Barrett D. LEWIS was located with the suspect vehicle and taken into custody by the Teaneck Police Department.

LEWIS was charged with one count of Leaving The Scene Of A Motor Vehicle Collision Resulting In Serious Bodily Injury, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.1, a crime of the 3rd degree and one count of Endangering The Welfare Of An Injured Victim, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.2, a crime of the 3rd degree. LEWIS is scheduled for a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack on Friday, May 15, 2019.

Acting Prosecutor Calo states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and would also like to thank the Teaneck Police Department for their assistance in this investigation
