Open Pits at Ridgewood Car Wash

IMG 5302

by Frank Geraghty

Ridgewood NJ, recently at Ridgewood Auto Wash after I gave instructions to the attendant I was given my receipt and headed past an open oil change area which has three open pits in the ground for oil changes that are seldom used. A man with his receipt in front of me walked towards the open pits, fortunately he turned back when he saw them. Sometimes that area is lit up other times it is in total darkness (see photo). Unprotected open pits are always dangerous. I spoke to the person at the cash register and told him I saw no warning signs and gave him the OSHA requirements which is to cover the pits or put high guardrails around them when not in use, this would stop adults, children or pets from walking or even running into them. He disagreed with me and said what happens when a car comes in for an oil change. I told him to move the guard rail to one side and let the car proceed. He obviously did not agree with me and was getting a bit agitated. Should not their insurance demand a guardrail or a cover for pits not in us.

  1. Let’s put electronic rail road crossing gates at every intersection in town too.

    1. It needs a sign:
      “Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch’intrate”

      Dante would approve.

  2. Or many take some responsibility and watch where youte going.

    1. The place has been open this way for over 30 years and you just noticed this?

I wonder how many skeletons are at the bottoms of those pits?

  3. Or maybe take some responsibility and watch where youte going.

  4. Seems fairly obvious not to walk thru the bay ur car just went through for an oil change

  6. Wow! We mourn the many thousands of customers killed or injured in these pits. I have been going to this business for many years and never realized it was so dangerous. I will be more cautious in the future.

    1. If you are quiet, you can hear the faint whispering of the souls who met their demise at the bottoms of those pits, praying for the refuge of a comfortable grave, to be met only with the dripping of 10W-30……

  7. What busy body with nothing else to do really truly bothered to be annoyed by this.
There are so many bigger issues. Get a life.

  8. There are a heck of a lot more serious things in Ridgewood than this. Gimme a break!
