Oradell NJ, Oradell Avenue has reopened in both directions, after a sinkhole had kept the eastbound side of the thoroughfare closed since the end of May. A sinkhole caused by a ruptured sewer line was first spotted on May 23 near the Oradell Street train station. According to Police ,there will be periodic maintenance this week during day time hours. Traffic will need to be altered so stay tuned for traffic updates.
On Monday, May 23rd at 7:00AM, the Oradell Police Department received a phone call about a dangerous pothole on Oradell Ave, between the railroad tracks and bridge. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that this was a large sink hole, compromising the roadway and utilities below.
Multiple agencies responded to investigate, including Oradell PD, Oradell DPW, Oradell OEM, NJ Transit, PSEG, and the Bergen County Utility Authority (BCUA) who maintains sanitary sewer main lines throughout Bergen County.
Although this section of Oradell Ave is a municipal roadway, the BCUA operates a 30” sanitary sewer line beneath the roadway. It was discovered that this pipe had collapsed, compromising the roadbed, and putting other utilities below at risk.
Heavy repairs are currently underway around the clock by the BCUA and their contractors, to replace the pipe and repair the roadway, however it has been reported that repairs will likely go into June.
It is expected that in the days and weeks to come, Oradell Ave Westbound will remain open, however, Eastbound between Kinderkamack Rd and Elm St will remain closed, with area detours in place. This will extend the periods of heavy traffic and delays through the borough. Please seek alternate routes and travel times when possible.
On June 8th , the Oradell Police Department issued the following , “Due to unforeseen circumstances during continued excavation today, Oradell Ave, will need to close in both directions between Kinderkamack Rd and Grant Ave tonight, Wednesday, June 8th at 7:00PM through Friday, June 10th at 4:00PM.
Please expect much longer than normal travel times through Oradell on Thursday and Friday. Pedestrian traffic will still be permitted to cross the bridge.
Once work is completed on Friday afternoon, Oradell Ave will open in both directions for the foreseeable future.”
