In September 2022, detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit received information from the Waldwick Police Department about an international tech support scam targeting residents. The investigation revealed that the computer tech support scam and associated frauds targeted numerous individuals in New Jersey and other states. The perpetrators created the belief that victim’s computers were compromised, and for a fee, they would “repair” their systems. Victims were instructed to provide remote access to their computers, which allowed the perpetrators to commit additional frauds beyond the initial scam. The investigation revealed that MONA SETHI established a shell company named Micro Technical Services, LLC. as well as bank accounts that facilitated victims’ funds moving overseas to India.
On January 25, 2023, personnel from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Waldwick Police Department, Bucks County District Attorney’s Office, Buckingham Twp. Police Department, and U.S. Secret Service executed a search warrant at MONA SETHI’s residence in Furlong, PA. MONA SETHI was arrested at this location without incident, and is pending extradition to New Jersey.
MONA SETHI was charged with second-degree theft by deception, N.J.S.A. 2C:20-4(a); second-degree money laundering, N.J.S.A. 2C:21-25b(1); second-degree conspiracy to commit money laundering, N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2a(1)/2C:21-25b(1); and second-degree conspiracy to commit theft by deception, N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2a(1)/2C:20-4(a).

Police Department, U.S. Secret Service, and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this investigation.
