Study: ABC, CBS and NBC loaded their broadcasts with 33 full stories in just 11 days of coverage of the Occupy Wall Street protests.

The Occupy Wall Street protestors have received overwhelmingly positive coverage from the Big Three (ABC, CBS, NBC) news networks, as they used their airtime to publicize and promote the aggressively leftist movement. In just the first eleven days of October, ABC, CBS and NBC flooded their morning and evening newscasts with a whopping 33 full stories or interview segments on the protesters. This was a far cry from the greeting the Tea Party received from the Big Three as that conservative protest movement was initially ignored (only 13 total stories in all of 2009) and then reviled.

Where the Tea Party was met with skeptical claims of their motivations — with some reporters claiming they were merely corporate backed puppets and others implying they were spurred on by their racist opposition to the first black president – the Occupy Wall Street crowd was depicted as an almost genial “grassroots” movement.

(RIDGEWOOD -NJ ) The mystery pizza tasters are currently making their way through the Village tasting their favorite slice from all the contestants. The contest will run through the entire month of October and the Winner will be announced in early November .

As previously announced due to the hotly contested nature of the contest and technical problems with the voting in the past there is a limit of 1 vote per IP . This year we are adding 5 secret reviewers who will taste a slice of pizza from each participant .We will then compare their selection with the Votes and see if they come to the same conclusions.  PJ will do a special taste test to break any ties should they occur .

Renato’s currently remains in the lead with Sicilian Sun and A Mano mounting strong challenges. We found this clip of Presidential contender Herman Cain singing “Imagine There’s No Pizza” at a Godfather Pizza event.

Ridgewood-NJ-October 17, 2011: The Ridgewood Knights of Columbus Council #1736 is once again proud to be hosting their annual stickball tournament, to be held on Saturday October 22nd beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Passaic Street in Ridgewood. The entrance fee is $100 for a team of four. There will be trophies for first, second, and third place. Refreshments, hotdogs, and hamburgers will be served. There is also a 50/50 raffle. Benefit proceeds will go to the Social Service Association of Ridgewood.

“Last year’s inaugural event was a huge success, and we expect this year to be just as lively”, said event coordinator Joseph Hernandez Jr.  “Last year the Knights went head-to-head with Ridgewood’s Finest and Bravest. We encourage other local organizations sign up and join in the activities this year.”

Registration is open to all. “We anticipate a good turn-out, and even if you do not wish to play, you can still come out and enjoy the event”, said Rich Paliotta, co-organizer of the event.

Looking for something fun to do with the kids on November 10th?  Join The Cooperative Nursery School of Ridgewood for Movie Day at Clearview Warner Theater at 190 E. Effort to boost safety on train tracks

NJ Transit is undertaking a systemwide examination and education effort to look at how improving safety at railroad crossings and around tracks in the wake of two incidents that left three teenagers dead.

State Transportation Commissioner James Simpson and NJ Transit Executive Director James Weinstein announced the effort last week. The announcement came after accidents in Garfield, where a teenager ducked under a closed crossing gate after a train passed and was hit by a second train, and Wayne, where two teens were struck and killed while using a railroad overpass as a shortcut.  (Higgs, Gannett)

Strong outflows take toll on state pension fund

New Jersey’s pension fund for government workers might be compared with a boat where rowers strain their oars to advance against a roiling current.

The pension fund, in total, gained a whopping 18 percent in its investments in the fiscal year that ended June 30.

But while state money managers pulled hard, they were faced with strong outflows: the fund had to pay out $7.7 billion more in benefits than it took in from contributions in that same time.

As stock markets fell in the past quarter ending Sept. 30, the fund’s investments slumped by nearly 7 percent and it had to pay out another $1.8 billion in benefits.

“They’re doing worse than treading water, and that’s not a surprise,” said New York-based consulting actuary Jeremy Gold, who tracks public pension funds.  (Method, Gannett)

Barack Obama, US president, offered more support for protesters against the global financial system after a weekend of demonstrations in cities around the world, but called on them not to “demonise” those who worked on Wall Street.

On Sunday, Mr Obama honoured Martin Luther King at a dedication to a new memorial on National Mall in Washington. Referring to protests that have spread from Wall Street to London, Rome and elsewhere, Mr Obama said: “Dr King would want us to challenge the excesses of Wall Street without demonising those who work there.” Mr Obama had previously said the protests “express the frustration” of ordinary Americans with the financial sector.

When Republicans took control of the House in January, they pledged to make deep cuts in federal spending, and in April they succeeded in passing a bill advertised as cutting $38 billion from fiscal 2011’s budget. Then in August, they pushed for a deal to cut an additional $2.4 trillion over the next decade.

Some analysts have blamed these spending cuts for this year’s economic slowdown.

But data released by the Treasury Department on Friday show that, so far, there haven’t been any spending cuts at all.

Higher Spending, Deficits

In fact, in the first nine months of this year, federal spending was $120 billion higher than in the same period in 2010, the data show. That’s an increase of almost 5%. And deficits during this time were $23.5 billion higher.

Whether Herman Cain’s surge in the polls is temporary or has staying power, he’s enjoying a big enough bounce to take a very slight lead over President Obama in a hypothetical 2012 matchup. At the moment, the Georgia businessman is the only Republican with a lead of any kind over Obama, although former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has held a similar advantage several times and is currently trailing the president by just two points.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely U.S. Voters shows Cain attracting 43% support, while Obama earns 41%. Given such a matchup, eight percent (8%) prefer some other candidate, and another eight percent (8%) are undecided.

A plan to resurrect a shuttered New Jersey hospital—potentially the first such facility to re-open after two decades of closures in the state—is drawing fire from competing medical centers that say it would weaken health care in the region.

Hackensack University Medical Center in Bergen County is moving forward with plans to re-open Pascack Valley Hospital as a 128-bed for-profit medical facility. The state’s Health Planning Board is now reviewing the plan, and Mary O’Dowd, the state’s health commissioner, is expected to issue a final decision by the end of the year.

(RIDGEWOOD -NJ) Several members of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Administrative District Council of New Jersey staged a protest in front of the GW Middle School between 0730 and 0830 this morning (see attached flyer).

Ridgewood Police Department Lieutenant William Amoruso met with GW Principal Dr. Katie Kashmanian outside the building to discuss her concerns regarding traffic safety issues related to the protest.  He then met with protesters to advise them of restrictions related to trespass on school property.

Two (2) Ridgewood Police Department patrol officers were assigned to monitor the protest and to enforce traffic and parking regulations in the area of Washington Place and North Monroe Street.
